“Imagine where you can go with a scholarship and a dream!”

Happy Monday! It’s me, Sherri, popping into your inbox with our weekly newsletter for students, parents, and those who support them. This week is filled with our featured scholarships, tips on staying ahead, and motivation.

For now, let's look at a few things from this week: Applications open soon at most universities and colleges. This brings up an interesting question:

Have you ever wondered what admissions officers prioritize in the college admissions process?

Admissions counselors consider a variety of factors when evaluating college applications. Here are some key priorities:

  1. Academic Performance:

    • GPA: A strong, consistent GPA is often a critical factor.

    • Course Rigor: Enrollment in challenging courses (AP, IB, honors) is also important.

    • Class Rank: Where the student stands in comparison to their peers.

  2. Standardized Test Scores:

    • SAT/ACT: Though some colleges have moved to test-optional policies, many still consider these scores.

    • Subject Tests: If required or submitted, these can provide additional insights.

  3. Extracurricular Activities:

    • Leadership Roles: Positions in clubs, sports teams, and other organizations.

    • Commitment: Depth of involvement over time rather than breadth of activities.

    • Achievements: Awards, recognitions, and accomplishments outside the classroom.

  4. Personal Essays:

    • Unique Voice: The student’s ability to present their unique perspective and story.

    • Writing Quality: Clarity, coherence, and grammar.

    • Insight: The essay’s ability to provide insight into the student’s character, values, and aspirations.

  5. Letters of Recommendation:

    • Teacher and Counselor Recommendations: Insights into the student's academic abilities and personal qualities.

    • Additional Recommendations: From mentors, coaches, or employers, if applicable.

  6. Demonstrated Interest:

    • Campus Visits: Visits, participation in virtual tours, and open houses.

    • Communication: Interaction with admissions officers, attendance at college fairs, and email correspondence.

    • Application Timing: Early decision or early action applications can indicate a strong interest.

  7. Personal Background:

    • Diversity: Contributions to the diversity of the student body, including cultural, socioeconomic, and geographical diversity.

    • Overcoming Adversity: How students have dealt with challenges or hardships.

  8. Special Talents and Skills:

    • Athletics: Recruitment for sports teams.

    • Arts: Talent in music, theater, visual arts, or other creative fields.

    • Other Skills: Unique skills that add value to the campus community.

  9. Fit with the Institution:

    • Mission and Values: Alignment with the college’s mission, values, and culture.

    • Program Interests: Genuine interest in specific programs or majors offered by the college.

  10. Holistic Review:

    • Overall Contribution: The potential to contribute positively to the campus community.

    • Contextual Factors: Consideration of the student’s personal and educational context, including school resources and opportunities available.

These factors collectively help admissions counselors determine which students will thrive at their institution and contribute to a diverse and dynamic student body.
