“Imagine where you can go with a scholarship and a dream!”
Happy Monday! It’s me, Sherri, popping into your inbox with our weekly newsletter for students, parents, and those who support them. This week is filled with our featured scholarships, tips on staying ahead, and motivation.
Higher Education
Most of us have found ourselves cheering for an Olympic team in the last week. This got me wondering, how many of those Olympic athletes are college students or played a college sport. If you’ve been wondering the same thing, here ya go…
This summer in Paris, 75% of U.S. Olympians will have competed collegiately as part of their journey to Team USA, which includes NCAA, junior college, NAIA and club programs. Of those, 65% (385 of 592) have competed in NCAA varsity sports across all three divisions. In total, 151 NCAA schools from 45 conferences will have one or more U.S. Olympians competing in Paris. View the full collegiate Team USA list here.
While only select students have the opportunity to play a sport in college, for those who do, the payoffs can be great.
Students
Here are some helpful tips you’ll need before starting a new semester:
Read the syllabus and then read it again. To be successful in class, you’ll need to schedule the test dates and read the expectations of your teacher or professor.
Going to class is critical if you want to succeed.
Learn to be a great note taker.
Meet classmates and start a class study group.
Learn what free campus resources are available to you and get a plan to use them.
Check your school email every single day.
Be responsible with your schedule. Don’t overextend yourself and also, don’t be lazy.
Set some goals for the semester and for the year. Develop a strategy for reaching your goals.
Join a club on campus. If there isn’t a good one, start one. This helps you meet like minded friends.
Make smart decisions and have boundaries about what you will and won’t do before you’re put in compromising situations.
Parents
It wasn’t that long ago that I was the parent of a college student leaving for the first time. I had a panic moment wondering if I’d taught them all that they needed to know.
The truth is, there is no way to teach them everything so we do the best we can at the time with the skills we have. Harvard has put together a list of things they think every student should know before they start college.
