For now, let's look at a few highlights from this week:

Higher Education Highlights

This week, I have a fun story to share…

Last week at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, graduates braved turbulent weather for their outdoor commencement. The speaker, Boston billionaire philanthropist Rob Hale, had a surprise for those who stayed despite the rain.

As Hale wrapped up his speech, he returned to the podium with two cash-stuffed duffel bags and announced that each graduate would receive $1,000 — $500 to keep and $500 to donate to a good cause.

Hale, the co-founder and CEO of Granite Telecommunications, is one of the nation's wealthiest and most generous benefactors. In 2022, he and his wife, Karen, donated $1 million weekly to various causes.

Reflecting on his past bankruptcy during the dot-com crash, Hale asked, "Honestly, have you guys ever met someone who lost a billion dollars before?"

When asked about his generous gift, Hale said, “If they get to feel that joy themselves, then maybe it becomes something they want to do again, and make part of their own lives,” Mr. Hale, 57, said. “In America and the world, these are times of turmoil, and the more we help each other, the better off we’ll be.”

What an inspiring story. What if we each tried to give something away today? Maybe even just a smile.
